Italian Passport / ID photo — requirements & how to

Italian passport photos use the ICAO-standard 35×45 mm format: white background, face covering 70–80% of the photo, taken within the last 6 months. You hand in a printed photo at the Questura (or consulate abroad) — since February 2026 just one photo is needed. The electronic ID card (CIE) uses the same format: bring a printed photo to the comune, or upload a digital one (JPG, ≥400 dpi, max 500 KB) if you booked via Agenda CIE.

Key rules for Italy

  • 1 recent photo (not older than 6 months) — since 23 February 2026 the passport needs only one
  • White background, uniform lighting — no shadows or flash reflections
  • Face (chin to forehead) must cover 70–80% of the photo — ICAO standard
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible; glasses only with clear lenses and no reflections
  • Head covering only for religious reasons, with the face and sides visible
  • CIE (ID card): same photo format as the passport — bring it to the comune, or upload via Agenda CIE
